CAN WE MEND THE RIFT BETWEEN DIASPORA AND ISRAELI JEWRY?

As we observe the deepening of the rift between Diaspora and Israeli Jewry we must all ask ourselves what can be done to heal this schism. We all must sense deep down in our gut that we as a people can ill afford this divide. And it is therefore paramount that as a priority we must collectively focus our efforts in dealing with this major challenge. During one of our leadership missions to Israel, a young man asked the world renowned scholar Rabbi Steinsaltz (may he be blessed with a complete and speedy recovery) what three things were most important in securing a healthy marriage. His answer was profoundly illuminating. Most important, he said was that the couple’s dreams must be aligned. S

EXPOSING OURSELVES TO RISK

One of the most intriguing stories we heard as children, is the sibling rivalry between Jacob and Esau. Although the narrative is very descriptive, the story remains ambiguous. Both with regard to the true personalities of the main characters and the legacy that they leave over to their descendents. Let us begin with the most obvious questions. If Esau is indeed an evil person, why does our patriarch Isaac love him even more so then he loves Jacob? To be sure much depends on finding the right one as this girl is destined to be a matriarch of the Jewish people. Eliezer who is the man appointed with this important task first goes to the well and prays to G-d. Alone in a foreign land, looking for the right girl poses a serious challenge. So he asks G-d for a sign. A sign which will make it clear to him that the girl would be the right one to play the role of the Jewis

WHAT GETS YOU EXCITED?

What gets you excited? Do you look forward to Monday morning? Or perhaps is it Friday? What about the weekend? Maybe you’re excited about your next vacation? What part of it most excites you? How long does the excitement last? What about friends? Are you excited to meet them? I ask this question today because of what I read about our forefather Abraham in this week’s Torah portion. We all know the story about how he leaves a spiritual encounter with G-d in order to offer his trademark gracious hospitality to strangers. But what struck me most was his eagerness and alacrity with which he carries out his mission. Let us remember that Abraham was a ninety nine year old man who is in the midst o
