Shemini - What's Going On?

I sometimes ask myself what’s the number one question universally asked this week by people around the world? In the U.K. I would venture to say the question people are asking is, what’s going on? Human beings try to make sense of what’s going on around them. Innately we believe there is a design in the tapestry of life. We believe that history follows certain patterns. We therefore try to explain how and why individuals behave in particular ways. Sometimes however we cant make sense of what’s going on. We fail to understand why people behave the way they do. We are surprised and dismayed by the events that surround us. Clearly we are living in tumultuous times. The impact of scient

SHEMINI: Whats Going On?

Sometimes I ask myself what’s the number one question universally asked this week by people around the world? In the U.K. I would venture to say the question people are asking is, what’s going on? Tzav (Shushan Purim): Are You Losing Control?

Do you feel like you’re losing control? Do you think the political climate is becoming unstable? If so, is there any way we can plan for the future? Human beings need clarity. It allows our faculties to operate to an optimum level. Uncertainty is profoundly debilitating. Jews however are uniquely equipped to not only operate under these conditions, but to thrive. Our greatest achievements as a people have happened precisely at times of great uncertainty. Abraham introduced monotheism to the world notwithstanding the risk to his personal life, with no clarity about his future. Moses challenged the mighty Pharaoh with no clear strategy about the possible ramifications. Nachahon takes

Vayikra - Don’t Worry They All Come Back!

How many Jews have been lost to our people? Think about the ten lost tribes! What about the Babylonian exile? How many Jews assimilated? What about the two millennia of our current exile? All in all the numbers must be staggering... How does G-d feel about his children who are lost? So lost, they are not even aware of their true identity. As fellow Jews, should this not be one of our greatest concerns? Should we all not be preoccupied with helping our lost brothers and sisters find their way back home? As a young yeshivah student some twenty five years ago I met Mr Sheldon Edelson (May G-d grant him a complete and speedy recovery) who was then just embarking on his hospitality and gami

Pekudei: How To Achieve That Sublime State Of Joy?

How often do we experience genuine joy in our lives? Do we even know it’s true definition? How does one achieve that sublime state of joy? The modern digital age in which we live is full of conundrums. The most blatant being; why a generation brought up in such affluence is so unhappy? In 2016, suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10 and 34, in the USA. The Talmud sates “When Adar begins, one increases rejoicing” (Taanit 29a). Today on the first day of the month of Adar what steps can we take to be more joyous? The Chassidic Masters provide profound insight on this subject. Completely counterintuitive to modern thinking. The key word ass

Vayakhel: How Do Great Leaders Unite A People?

How do great leaders unite a people? How do we create cohesion and unity in our own family? What does it take to build successful teams at work? No two people think alike. Researchers have established that our brains have the same level of uniqueness as our fingerprints. Our default position seems to be in our uniqueness and individuality. How then can we be expected to reconcile our differences? This week’s Torah portion opens with such an attempt. On the day after He descends from Mount Sinai, we read that “Moses assembled the whole Israelite community”. He achieves this only because he is able to inspire the Jewish people to share his vision of building a sanctuary for G-d in this world.
